Beaufort County Blanketed in Rare Winter Wonderland!

Beaufort, South Carolina, is experiencing quite the winter surprise! On January 21, 2025, a rare winter storm graced the area, gifting residents with a stunning layer of snow and sleet. Accumulations have reached between 2 to 4 inches across the region, making it a sight to behold! But it hasn’t just been pretty; this winter wonderland has caused some major disruptions as businesses closed their doors, and schools cancelled classes.

Businesses and Schools Hit the Snooze Button

Many businesses decided to close on January 22, resulting in an unexpected slowdown for the local economy. Folks are enjoying the day off, but it certainly shook things up in Beaufort! The streets of Bay Street and Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park are now buried under a beautiful blanket of snow, enticing many residents to bundle up and head out for some fun.

Unfortunately, the fun comes with some consequences as numerous safety issues have arisen. Temperatures have ~hovered in the 30s, causing hard-packed snow and ice to persist~ on local roads, making travel quite tricky. In light of these weather-related challenges, schools across the Beaufort County School District announced a closure for classes and E-learning on January 24, 2025, and remain shut until January 27. So, students will be on extended winter break for a few more days!

Extracurricular activities scheduled through January 26 have also been postponed to ensure everyone’s safety during this frosty spell. Meanwhile, in nearby Jasper County, schools are opting for an E-learning day on January 24 to keep up with educational needs while prioritizing safety.

Municipal Offices and Travel Disruptions

As the weather worsened, municipal offices in Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Port Royal decided to follow suit and will remain closed on January 24. Fortunately, ferry service to Daufuskie Island is expected to resume on January 24, but only if weather conditions permit. However, it’s bad news for those looking to take to the skies; both Hilton Head Island and Beaufort Executive Airports remain grounded due to icy conditions.

To help out those struggling with the cold, local warming shelters have extended their hours. Sea Island Presbyterian Church is running a cold weather shelter from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. through January 25, while Christ Lutheran Church has been providing shelter since January 20 to offer safety from the chilly temperatures.

Danger on the Roads and Delight in the Snow

As this cold front lingers, the National Weather Service has issued warnings about the potential formation of black ice overnight as temperatures continue to dip. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents to stick to their homes unless absolutely necessary, urging everyone to stay clear of the roads as conditions remain hazardous.

However, despite the warnings, many residents are embracing the spirit of winter by taking part in recreational activities. Some adventurous souls have been spotted sledding down the Charles E. Fraser Bridge in Hilton Head on January 22, making the most of the snow while keeping safety in mind.

It’s noteworthy that local law enforcement has reported relatively few accidents, indicating that residents are taking safety warnings seriously. Public safety officials are actively monitoring road conditions and addressing any issues related to the winter weather.

Weekend Outlook: Cold, But Warming Up Next Week

As we head into the upcoming weekend, the cold weather is expected to stick around a bit longer, but the forecast hints at a potential warming trend into next week. So, hang in there, Beaufort! In the meantime, enjoy the beauty that this rare winter storm has brought, and make sure to stay warm and safe as you navigate the chilly streets of our winter wonderland!
