Beaufort County Gets Ready for a Snowy Surprise!

Hey, Beaufort County! It looks like we might be in for a bit of a winter wonderland next week. Can you believe it? Snow on the beaches could be making a comeback for the first time in seven years! That’s right; you heard it here first. The weather folks are predicting a little sprinkle of the white stuff starting on January 21 and continuing into January 22. It’s time to grab those mittens and make sure your hot cocoa supply is fully stocked!

What to Expect from Old Man Winter

According to the National Weather Service, we could see anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of snow during this time. That sounds like just enough for some fun snowman-building, wouldn’t you say? However, hold your horses because it’s not just snow that we’ll be dealing with. By Thursday, things are really going to cool down, with daytime temperatures barely creeping into the 30s and nighttime lows dipping into the 20s.

Things get even chillier when wind chill values come into play, potentially dropping to between 8 and 15 degrees. So, if you think it’ll be a cozy day outside, think again! And don’t forget about the risk of freezing rain, which could hit Thursday into Friday. That’ll make for slick roads and possibly some minor travel headaches.

Travel Woes Ahead

As the snow begins to fall, there could be a 50 to 70 percent chance of minor travel impacts from both snow and freezing rain. And let’s not sugarcoat it, there’s also a 30 to 50 percent chance of moderate impacts that could pose risks to life and property. So, if you need to hit the road, be sure to take a moment to check road conditions before you head out.

Preparing for the Cold

Residents are encouraged to keep outdoor activities to a minimum during this wintry weather and make sure your furry friends are warm and comfy indoors. Safety first, right? In case you listen and find yourself in need of shelter from the cold, there are several cold shelters available to lend a helping hand.

For those in need, Sea Island Presbyterian Church will be open from Sunday through Wednesday, providing dinner, breakfast, and even showers from 5 PM to 8 AM. You can reach them at 843-525-0696 if you have any questions. Another option is Christ Lutheran Church, which will be open Monday through Wednesday, offering dinner and to-go breakfast from 5:30 PM to 7:30 AM. Give them a call at 843-540-4299 if you need more info.

School Closures on the Horizon?

The Beaufort County School District will be making decisions about school cancellations by mid-day on Monday. So, keep an eye on those updates if you have kiddos in school! The last time we saw significant snowfall in Beaufort was back on January 3, 2018, when 5 to 6 inches blanketed the area. Time flies, doesn’t it?

Stay Informed!

All this cold weather is courtesy of an incoming low-pressure system from the south, set to collide with an Arctic air mass. This could lead to all sorts of mixed precipitation, including our fluffy friend snow. Whatever happens, it’s wise to stay updated on the weather forecasts, as conditions can change rapidly.

So, what do you think? Ready to bundle up and enjoy a bit of snow at the beach? Remember to keep warm, stay safe, and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery if it arrives!
