Beaufort County Walk for Water Gears Up for a Meaningful Cause
Beaufort is getting ready to welcome an estimated 1,000 walkers for the eighth annual Beaufort County Walk for Water, set to take place on two consecutive Saturdays – September 14 at Live Oaks Park in Port Royal and September 21 at Wright Family Park in Bluffton. This remarkable event aims to raise a record $100,000 to tackle the pressing global water crisis.
Raising Awareness and Funds
The Beaufort County Walk for Water isn’t just a walk; it’s a rallying cry that brings community members together to raise awareness about the global water crisis while raising funds to provide sustainable and safe water solutions. All the money raised directly supports Water Mission, a Charleston-based nonprofit organization dedicated to building safe water solutions in developing countries and disaster-stricken areas.
Last year, the walk saw a historic turnout with more than 700 registered walkers coming together on both sides of the Beaufort River. According to Robert Lasher, the committee chair for the walk, this community participation has the potential to change the lives of thousands of people who are in dire need of clean water. “The money the walk raises makes a life-changing difference for generations in communities around the world,” Lasher emphasized. “As little as $50 provides one person ongoing access to safe, clean water. $500 can create latrine sanitation for a community, and just over $1,000 can build solar panels for a power source,” he added.
Experience the Walk
Participants will have the unique opportunity to carry a bucket of water during a 3-mile walk to symbolize the burden that millions of women and children face daily in developing countries. These individuals often walk long distances to collect water that is frequently contaminated, leading to devastating consequences. According to statistics from Water Mission, a person dies from water-related illnesses every 37 seconds somewhere in the world. The walk serves not only as a physical journey but also as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle many face to secure this essential resource.
