Businesses in Beaufort, SC including Charles Schwab and Wells Fargo Advisors, have a reason to rejoice the forthcoming Beaufort County Internship Program, which is set to launch in August 2024. Councilman Tom Reitz and Dr. Frank Rodriquez, Superintendent of the Beaufort County School District, who share an extraordinary vision for local economic growth and education, have trailblazed this program.
The ambitious structure of the Beaufort County Internship Program uniquely educates high school and college students in county government affairs. This insight prepares them for potential employment within the county in the future. Further sweetening this initiative, the 15-week internship program offers participants the opportunity to earn $15 per hour for up to 15 hours of work per week.
It’s not just the business community acknowledging the program. A number of influential community voices have thrown their weight behind the initiative. Roy R. Brown, co-founder of The Community Coalition Action Network of St. Helena Island (CCAN), is one prominent local figure cheering on the program.
Brown acknowledges that the program is a wonderful opportunity for all involved. He urges local high school and college students to take advantage of this unique educational/workforce training opportunity. He was also encouraged that Gullah students on St. Helena Island were among the first to know about the internship program.
Applications for the program are already being accepted online. In-person applications can be picked up at CCAN on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 10 a.m. and noon, and on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The location for CCAN is 808 Sea Island Parkway on St. Helena Island.
With industries as diverse as finance (Charles Schwab), healthcare, and education pivotal to Beaufort’s local economy, the internship program could have far-reaching impacts. As skilled labor becomes increasingly sought after, this new initiative may provide a competitive edge necessary to push the local economy forward.
On a broader level, this visionary model reflects the increasing convergence between academia and employment, collaboration and innovation, with intending benefits for future generations of Beaufort County. In fact, Beaufort stands a chance at being emulated by other counties seeking to optimize their local talent pool.
While the Internship Program is yet to officially commence, it has successfully captivated local attention. It is undeniably a bold move for furthering Beaufort’s educational and economic development agenda, providing a clear path towards local success. Beaufort is not just on the map but charting a flight course for others to follow.
