Beaufort County is set to experience its first significant snowfall in seven years, with predictions of 3 to 5 inches expected on January 21, 2025. Winter storm warnings have been issued, prompting early school dismissals and virtual learning. Residents are advised to stay warm and safe as temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with wind chills in the low teens. Local health facilities will also close temporarily. Get ready for a winter wonderland and enjoy the snow day responsibly!
Hey there, Beaufort County! It looks like winter is finally bringing some fun to the Lowcountry as we prepare for a significant snowfall starting January 21, 2025. That’s right, folks! A winter storm warning has been issued for all of the Lowcountry, including our own Beaufort County and many inland areas. When was the last time we had a good snow day? Seven years ago, or so they say! So, get ready to bundle up!
So, what’s in store for us? It’s predicted that we could see anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow, sleet, and freezing rain beginning late in the afternoon. The fun starts after 5 p.m. when the rain rolls in, but don’t get too comfy—by 11 p.m., we can expect a switch to snow and sleet! Wake up on January 22 with a winter wonderland right outside your window!
Now, let’s talk about the temperatures. January 21 is set to have highs reaching the low to mid-40s, but don’t let that fool you! Overnight, we could plummet into the 20s, leaving it feeling chilly enough to chill your bones. January 22 looks to be the coldest day so far this season, with highs staying in the 30s and the wind chill dipping into the low teens. That’s a recipe for some serious frostbite if you’re not careful!
Attention parents! The Beaufort County School District has made some adjustments in light of the weather. Elementary schools will let students out at 11:45 a.m., while middle and high schools will dismiss at 12:45 p.m. on January 21. Then, on January 22, all classes will be held virtually, giving kids the chance to learn from the warmth of their homes, as district buildings will be closed. No after-school activities will happen on January 21 and 22, either, giving kids plenty of time to enjoy the snow if we do indeed get some.
But wait—there’s more! The Technical College of the Lowcountry will move to virtual operations until 2 p.m. on January 21 and close completely until January 22. Meanwhile, the University of South Carolina Beaufort is closing its doors at 2 p.m. on January 21 and won’t reopen until January 22. Even administrative offices on Hilton Head Island will shut down at noon on January 21, remaining closed the next day.
If you’re planning to travel, it’s worth mentioning that both the Hilton Head Island Airport and Beaufort Executive Airport were operating normally as of January 21, but it’s wise for travelers to check for any flight delays or cancellations. Palmetto Breeze will also suspend its operations on January 22, resuming all regular services on January 23.
Health facilities are not getting a break from winter’s chill, either. The Beaufort Memorial physician practices and outpatient departments will be closed on January 22, with some surgeries needing to be rescheduled. Local law enforcement and the South Carolina Department of Transportation will also be monitoring road conditions and assessing for potential closures.
As we prepare for the cold, shelters have opened at several locations, including Sea Island Presbyterian Church and Christ Lutheran Church. There’s even an emergency warming shelter in Jasper County at Kingdom Touch Ministries starting January 21. If you’re traveling on the roads after the snow hits, be cautious of potential black ice! Safety first, everyone.
So, grab your hot cocoa, wrap yourself in a cozy blanket, and prepare for a wintry surprise. Let’s make the most of this snow day, Beaufort County! Stay safe and warm out there!
