As we approach the upcoming elections on November 5, the spotlight is on the Beaufort County Council, and believe us when we say: it’s high time some changes are made. Residents here are feeling the need for fresh faces and renewed energy. Our message can be summed up in just four simple words: Vote the bums out.
For far too long, the members of the County Council have been keeping us in the dark. Recently, there have been troubling signs of a cover-up regarding an investigation into fiscal mismanagement that spanned five long years. Let’s face it, folks, the public deserves to know what’s been going on with their hard-earned tax dollars.
The council’s attempts to withhold information have confused and frustrated many of us. Initially, they suggested only giving an oral report in a public meeting, followed by a pitiful six-page summary. Misleading claims were made that releasing more information would require a unanimous decision. But here’s the kicker: experts in public records stated that wasn’t true at all. It’s clear—six out of eleven council members are not living up to their responsibilities.
As we gear up for the election, we’re zooming in on two critical council districts that are begging for improvement. Let’s start with District 1. The recommendation from our community voices is loud and clear: vote for Adam Biery, the Republican candidate. His opponent, Gerald Dawson, has drifted away from the needs and concerns of his constituents. It’s as if he’s checked out!
In stark contrast, Biery has vowed to prioritize responsible growth management, transparency, and improvements to our infrastructure. He understands that public trust is at the heart of effective governance. Biery’s commitment to sharing information and fostering an engaging environment is something we really need to embrace. Who doesn’t want to feel heard during community discussions?
Moving on to District 7, our endorsed candidate is Sarah McCarty, a Democrat who promises much-needed fresh energy to the council. Yes, we have to give credit to the Republican incumbent, Logan Cunningham, for at least responding to our queries. But let’s be real—it shouldn’t take a lot of effort to communicate with those you represent!
McCarty’s priorities resonate deeply with many of us: environmental protection, responsible development, and infrastructure resilience. She has a well-rounded background and understands that public safety means ensuring the well-being of our community, not just reacting to emergencies. Her approach emphasizes preventative measures, and she knows how crucial stormwater management is after those fierce storms we experienced recently.
It’s disheartening to see incumbents’ lack of responsiveness when it’s their job to engage with us. McCarty and Biery both bring that “fresh perspective” that’s clearly missing. They are eager to promote transparency, listen to feedback, and ensure that the community feels involved in government decisions.
As we prepare to cast our votes, let’s remember: it’s all about accountability and having representatives who actively seek to inform and engage us. The recent mishaps of the current council show that they need to face the music. Let’s give Biery and McCarty the chance they deserve to lead our community into a brighter future.
This November 5, make your voice count. It’s time to foster a council that champions openness, responsibility, and active engagement with the community. Remember, the power is in your hands. Let’s take this opportunity to create the positive change Beaufort County needs!
