Beaufort County Gears Up for Conservation Conversations
As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, the beautiful city of Beaufort is buzzing with excitement as Election Day approaches. Voters here are gearing up to make informed choices about lawmakers who are actively working to protect South Carolina’s cherished natural resources. With so much at stake, it’s essential to understand who is championing conservation efforts in the state.
Scorecard Spotlight
One handy resource to help you navigate this crucial topic is the online Legislative Scorecard. This nifty tool gives residents a sneak peek into how our lawmakers have voted on key conservation issues. And here’s a little teaser: many of our Beaufort County legislators are scoring in the mid-80s—a solid sign that they’re advocating for our land and resources.
The scorecard is put together by an organization known as Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC). Their mission revolves around lobbying for smart policies that protect our land, water, air, and historic sites while also promoting clean energy. They’re dedicated to collaborating with lawmakers from all political backgrounds to find practical solutions.

Understanding Our Natural Resources
It’s hard to fathom just how much nature we have in South Carolina. The state boasts approximately 19 million acres of resources, which include 13 million forest acres, 11,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 187 miles of beach. Plus, it’s worth noting that 25 percent of South Carolina is made up of wetlands, which are predominantly found in our beautiful Lowcountry.
These natural landscapes are not just pretty to look at—they are essential habitats for wildlife and birds. With the help of the CVSC, significant strides have been made in preserving our land. Back in 2004, they played a pivotal role in the passage of the South Carolina Conservation Bank Act, which has since protected 390,000 critical acres from potential development.
Community Initiatives
Residents have shown their support for conservation at the local level, too. In 2022, voters in Beaufort County approved the Green Space Tax, aimed at protecting our critical lands from future development. This summer, a portion of these funds was directed toward acquiring Gregorie Neck, a stunning 4,000-acre area that will help safeguard our waterways, benefiting Port Royal Sound and even stretching to the Atlantic coast.
Additionally, successful local initiatives have led to the preservation of 2,000 acres of sensitive spaces on Hilton Head Island. The Mid-Island Tract is one prime example, providing a home for unique species, including the red-headed woodpecker.
Welcome to Migration Season!
For bird enthusiasts, this time of year is especially thrilling! The migration season is in full swing, and many visitors have flocked to Beaufort County. According to migration tracking, over 15 million birds have crossed into the area since August 1. This is an amazing opportunity for locals to join guided tours and witness an array of beautiful species, from tundra swans to striking spoonbills.
