Beaufort Celebrates 40 Years of Heartfelt Community Service
As the sun rises over Beaufort, a warm and welcoming vibe fills the air. At the Good Neighbor Medical Clinic, the day begins with volunteers and community members eager to lend a helping hand. One such member is Jason, a hardworking man who has spent over 60 years of his life engaged in labor-intensive jobs. Today, he finds himself at the clinic waiting to meet with a volunteer medical provider from nearby Dataw Island.
Sharon McElveen, who oversees the administrative volunteers at the clinic, can’t help but appreciate the bond formed between the clinic and Dataw. “I don’t know what we would do without the residents of Dataw,” she reflects. It’s a sentiment shared by many, as nearly a third of the clinic’s 100-plus volunteers come from the island, including significant figures like the former medical director, Dr. Stephen Kessel, and current medical director, Dr. David Baehren.
A Legacy of Giving
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Dataw, a community that was built on a spirit of camaraderie and giving back to those in need. From the very beginning, the island’s residents have been encouraged to be “good neighbors” in the Beaufort area, as its developer ALCOA envisioned. And boy, have they delivered! According to a recent survey, an astonishing 94 percent of Dataw residents volunteer—time, energy, and funds—supporting more than 65 nonprofits and charitable organizations.
Their contributions stretch across various initiatives. Whether it’s raising funds for veterans or sewing quilts for underprivileged children, the Dataw community thrives on making a positive difference. Volunteers engage in activities such as picking up litter along highways, organizing blood drives, and even protecting sea turtle nests on Hunting Island, showcasing their incredible commitment to a wide array of causes.
A Helping Hand at the Clinic
Back at the Good Neighbor Medical Clinic, Jason shares his story. It’s been 14 years since he first walked through the doors seeking medical help when he was referred by Dr. James Warren Goettle, a founding member of the clinic and a compassionate volunteer from Dataw. Thanks to the early intervention provided by Dr. Goettle, Jason underwent surgery to address a serious health issue, an act that saved his life. “This place, the clinic, has been my lifesaver,” he asserts.
The Good Neighbor Medical Clinic caters to uninsured adults, providing vital care for those who are often working but lack benefits. Many of their patients come from various professions, ranging from restaurant workers to young people who have transitioned off their parents’ insurance. The clinic has negotiated lower fees for specialists and surgeries, proving to be a critical source of care in the community.
A Community-Driven Initiative
In 2023 alone, the clinic transformed nearly $500,000 in donations into an astounding $4.6 million worth of patient services, which is no small feat! They’re not just treating ailments; they’re supporting the entire well-being of their patients. Each year, around 700 individual patients benefit from these services, highlighting the clinic’s vital role in the community.

The impact of Dataw residents goes beyond medical services. Their involvement in community boards and initiatives is significant. Individuals like Joseph “Woody” Rutter and Ed Like exemplify the spirit of giving, serving as board members for various foundations and organizations in Beaufort. Their combined efforts, alongside those of countless Dataw volunteers, ensure that a meaningful difference is made.
Yet, the story is not just about local impact—it’s what the community truly represents. A harmonious blend of caring individuals committed to elevating each other and the surrounding area.
