Hilton Head Island, S.C. — In a heart-wrenching case of animal neglect, a former Marine, Victoria Spencer, found herself facing serious consequences after she pleaded guilty to five counts of animal cruelty. Spencer had been entrusted with the care of five pets while their owners were away, and her failure to provide adequate care led to tragic results.

The Incident

The case began in September 2023 when a couple from Hilton Head Plantation hired Spencer through the online pet-sitting service, Trusted Housesitters. They were headed off on a nine-day vacation and expected that their two dogs and three cats would be well cared for in their absence. Unfortunately, things took a dire turn.

According to reports, Spencer was responsible for visiting the home regularly to feed and exercise the animals. However, security footage from a Ring camera revealed that her visits to the residence abruptly ceased, leaving the animals trapped in their crates without access to food and water.

The Dreadful Discovery

When the owners returned home on September 14, they were met with a scene that was described as “horrific.” One of their Australian shepherds, Stryker, had tragically died from dehydration, while the other, Roxie, was severely dehydrated and had injuries from attempting to escape her kennel. Both dogs had been crammed into filthy kennels, surrounded by feces and tattered bedding.

As for the cats, while they appeared physically unharmed, they too suffered from neglect, as their food and water bowls were empty, and their litter box was overflowing. The couple, Jeff and Julie Tomlinson, had left Spencer with detailed care instructions alongside emergency contacts but received misleading messages from her while they were away.

A Courtroom Drama

This week, amidst an emotional atmosphere, Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen sentenced the 21-year-old Spencer to 179 days in jail, followed by five years of probation. She was also ordered to pay back a hefty $7,716 in restitution to the pet owners for veterinary bills. Mullen’s decision surprised many, as prosecutors had initially suggested no jail time. Spencer’s actions struck a nerve, prompting Mullen to emphasize the importance of the human responsibility towards pets.

The Defense

Spencer, who received an “other than honorable” discharge from her military service post-arrest, expressed remorse in court. With tears in her eyes, she apologized, stating, “If I would have known what was going to happen to the animals, I wouldn’t have ever done anything like that.” Her defense attorney, Chad Shelton, attributed her behavior to youthful recklessness, stating, “I think it was just things got overwhelmed in her life.”

The Impact on the Tomlinsons

Outside the courtroom, the Tomlinsons shared their relief at the resolution of the case. Jeff expressed that the impact statements and support letters sent on their behalf likely influenced the judge to impose jail time. The couple acknowledged that while Roxie was recovering and back to her lively self, the memory of Stryker’s absence still weighed heavily on their hearts. They noted that she often wandered around the house, searching for her late brother.

Looking Forward

In a bid to help other animals in similar situations, the Tomlinsons announced that any restitution they receive will be donated to local veterinary hospitals that assisted in Roxie’s care. They also received assurance from Trusted Housesitters that they are enhancing their screening process to prevent future incidents.
