Charleston is buzzing with excitement as the Lowcountry Land Trust marks a monumental achievement: 35 years of tireless efforts to preserve the stunning landscapes and waterways of the ACE Basin! What Exactly is the ACE Basin?
Spanning across Charleston, Colleton, Beaufort, Dorchester, and Hampton Counties, the ACE Basin is a treasure trove of ecological and cultural richness. Named after its three rivers – the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto – this area boasts over 300,000 acres of protected land. Can you imagine how much beauty that is to savor and enjoy?
A Vision That Began 35 Years Ago
The seeds of this successful initiative were planted back in the 1980s. A group of forward-thinking private landowners, wildlife enthusiasts, and dedicated nonprofit organizations came together to address the serious dangers posed by rapid waterfront development on Edisto Island. Those initial conversations formed the backbone of what we now know as the ACE Basin Project.
Among the first to step up were Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley and Charles Lane, alongside partners from the SC Coastal Conservation League, The Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Together, they forged a path towards effective conservation that laid the groundwork for future successes.
A Growing Coalition for Success
Fast forward to today, and this task force has expanded its horizons! Now, it includes the Lowcountry Land Trust, the Nemours Wildlife Foundation, and several land trusts committed to preserving our cherished open spaces. With continued guidance from original leaders, this coalition represents an impressive array of talents and expertise!
How Do They Do It?
The ACE Basin Project is centered on a watershed and habitat-focused approach. This means marrying public land acquisitions with private conservation easements, creating a unity of purpose among various partners – both federal and state agencies, as well as private entities.
