Exploring the Wonders of Birding in Hilton Head

Hilton Head is truly a paradise for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts alike! As the vibrant colors of fall surround us, it’s the perfect time to connect with the Lowcountry’s feathered friends. This November, a wonderful lineup of events gives both seasoned birders and curious newcomers a chance to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of birds. With local experts leading the way, you’ll be able to see, hear, and learn everything about our avian neighbors!

Meet the Passionate Birders

One of the shining stars of the Hilton Head Audubon community is Patty Kappmeyer. She stumbled upon her passion for bird photography over thirty years ago, and now her stunning images grace various platforms! “I am happiest taking photos, wandering through the marshes and forests, plodding through pluff mud,” says Patty, who also serves as an Audubon board member. She writes a monthly column called “Feathers Through our Lenses,” where she shares captivating stories alongside her breathtaking photographs.

Join Patty at the Hilton Head library on November 2 for an engaging event that promises to deepen your appreciation for the Lowcountry’s birds. Get ready to be enchanted as she shares her adventures and the beautiful moments she has captured in her career as a bird photographer.

Birding by Ear

Ever been baffled by bird calls while out in nature? Jim Asmuth, a dedicated birder, may just have the answer for you! His love for understanding bird songs blossomed one foggy morning in Connecticut when he realized one Hermit Thrush was singing a solo-duet all by itself. Since then, Jim has been on a quest to help folks “tune in” to the world of birds. Mark your calendars for November 5, when he presents “Birding by Ear”. Then, on November 9, he’ll take a group to Jarvis Creek Park for an exciting field trip where you might just hear the magic of a Hermit Thrush.

A Historical Birding Adventure

For those fascinated by history along with birdwatching, the “Birds and Battlefield” tour on November 9 is an absolute must! Rich Thomas, a historian with a passion for the past, will take participants to the site of the Battle of Honey Hill, where interestingly, eight colonies of endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers have made their homes. Listen for these fascinating woodpecker calls while learning about the battlefield’s history from Rich!

Helping guide this adventure is Lynn Hodson, a biologist known for her knack in spotting rare species! Lynn, affectionately called the “Nature Lady” in Maine, has spent years sharing her love for birds and nature in the Lowcountry.

Connecting with Nature Through Words

For a slightly different perspective, don’t miss out on Diana Churchill on November 23. Known widely as the “Bird Lady,” she has enriched the community with her writing and photography over the years. Join her at Sterling Hill Park in Richmond Hill, Georgia, a former sewage treatment area turned bird haven, for a leisurely three-mile walk. Expect to catch sight of migrating sparrows, warblers, and perhaps even a snipe!

As Sir David Attenborough pointed out, “Everyone loves birds,” and these events provide the perfect platform to appreciate these beautiful creatures. So, whether you’re a newcomer to birdwatching or a seasoned pro, grab your binoculars and get ready for an adventure in the Lowcountry!
