Beaufort Gears Up for a Spectacular Celebration of Lafayette’s Historic Visit

Beaufort is buzzing with excitement as plans unfold for a grand commemoration marking the 200th anniversary of the illustrious Marquis de Lafayette’s visit to the city. This remarkable event, set to take place in March 2025, promises to bring history back to life and create a memorable experience for residents and visitors alike.

History Comes Alive

The Historic Beaufort Foundation, in collaboration with the City of Beaufort and various partners, has been hard at work since August to develop an engaging program packed with activities that will educate and entertain. The festivities include everything from lectures and contests to school events and reenactments, all aimed at celebrating this significant moment in American history.

A standout moment in the celebration will be a re-enactment of Lafayette’s arrival, scheduled for March 18. On that day, a procession will wind its way through downtown Beaufort, echoing the warm reception Lafayette received back in 1825. The day’s festivities will culminate in a Colonial Ball held at the picturesque Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, reminiscent of the grand ball Lafayette attended during his visit. What a fantastic way to relive the past!

A Community Effort

Beaufort’s Mayor Phil Cromer expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The 200-year anniversary of Lafayette’s visit reminds us of how integral Beaufort and the Lowcountry have been in shaping our nation’s history.” This community-wide effort involves around 50 local, state, regional, and national organizations working together to ensure that March 2025 is a celebration to remember.

The Beaufort County School District is also getting involved, with plans to encourage participation from various educational institutions, even extending to private, charter, home, and virtual schools. “This is a unique chance for our community to honor our heritage and delve deeper into our state and national history,” said Cynthia Jenkins, Executive Director of the Historic Beaufort Foundation.

Welcoming a Special Guest

Joining the festivities is the acclaimed Lafayette interpreter, Mark Schneider, a U.S. Army veteran who has spent over 25 years portraying the French nobleman at Colonial Williamsburg. “Mark is the biggest deal we have. He’s an expert on Lafayette and has immersed himself in his life and legacy,” said Charles Schwam of the American Friends of Lafayette. His knowledge will undoubtedly enhance the authenticity of the reenactment.

The Legacy of Lafayette

But who was Lafayette, and why is his visit to Beaufort so significant? The Marquis de Lafayette was a pivotal figure during the American Revolutionary War, known for his dedication to the cause of independence. He left France to join the Continental Army, serving under none other than General George Washington and playing a vital role in the victory at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781.

After the war, Lafayette embarked on a “Farewell Tour” in 1824, which saw him visiting numerous states, including South Carolina, where he made stops in locations like Cheraw, Columbia, and, of course, Beaufort. His arrival here was met with great fanfare—a 13-gun salute, a grand procession, and a night of festivities.

Help Wanted

As preparations ramp up, the Historic Beaufort Foundation is keen to involve the community further. They are inviting anyone interested to reach out about helping or contributing to the celebrations. Donations, sponsorships, and volunteer efforts are all welcome to ensure that this occasion fits the historical significance it deserves.

“We started our research and preparations almost two years ago, knowing it would take our full community to pull together a commemoration worthy of Lafayette’s return,” Sundrla noted.

Get Involved!

People interested in getting involved can contact the Historic Beaufort Foundation at info@historicbeaufort.org. This is truly a chance to be part of something special, well over two centuries in the making.

Beaufort is ready to celebrate history, and with a little help from everyone, this journey back in time is sure to be unforgettable!
