Beaufort Gears Up to Celebrate 200 Years Since Lafayette’s Historic Visit

Beaufort is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to mark a significant moment in its history—*the 200th anniversary of French hero Marquis de Lafayette’s visit*! Back in 1825, Lafayette, who had made a name for himself by fighting alongside General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War, graced this lovely South Carolina city. And now, the town is rolling out the red carpet for his “return” on March 18, 2025.

A Hero’s Journey

Before we dive into the festivities, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. Lafayette, born into a wealthy French family, became a key figure in the fight for American independence as a young man of just 19. He lost his father to battle against the British, which fueled his passion to join the Continental Army. His courage and leadership during decisive battles like Yorktown helped the United States break free from British rule, earning him the affectionate title of “*America’s Favorite Fighting Frenchman*.”

Fast forward to August 1824, when Lafayette began a grand tour of the United States, celebrating the nation he helped to create. He visited 24 states, and his journey included a stop in Beaufort on March 18, 1825. The townspeople greeted Lafayette with a 13-gun salute, and history says he stood on the steps of the historic Verdier House—a landmark that still stands today—greeting the enthusiastic crowd below.

Reliving History with a Reenactment

Fast forward to 2025, and the town is ready to celebrate this momentous occasion with a bang! *Mark Schneider*, an experienced Lafayette interpreter and U.S. Army veteran, will step into Lafayette’s shoes to reenact that historic visit. Schneider, who has spent over 25 years portraying the French aristocrat at *Colonial Williamsburg*, is set to bring history to life in a way that promises to captivate both residents and visitors alike.

The reenactment will kick off with a lively procession through Beaufort’s charming downtown, culminating in a *colonial ball* at the picturesque *Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park*. This dance will mirror the grand ball that was held in Lafayette’s honor two centuries ago, providing a unique opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in history.

A Community Celebration

The Historic Beaufort Foundation and other local organizations have been working tirelessly to ensure this celebration is one to remember. *Cynthia Jenkins*, the Executive Director of the Foundation, described the upcoming event as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the community, emphasizing how Lafayette’s visit remains a cherished part of Beaufort’s legacy.

*Lise Sundrla*, the Foundation’s Assistant Director, echoed this sentiment, reminding us of Lafayette’s crucial role in the siege of Yorktown, which ultimately secured American independence. “We’ve spent nearly two years preparing for this event, and it’s incredible to see the community come together to honor Lafayette’s return,” she said.

A Lasting Legacy

Even after Lafayette’s passing in 1834, his legacy continues to resonate in Beaufort and beyond. The town plans to install a *historical marker* in front of the Verdier House to commemorate his visit, ensuring that future generations remember this significant chapter in American history.

As the 200-year anniversary approaches, the excitement in Beaufort is palpable. *Mayor Phil Cromer* noted, “This celebration is a reminder of how Beaufort and the Lowcountry have been vital players in our nation’s history.” With everyone rallying to make certain this occasion is special, there’s no doubt that Lafayette’s return to Beaufort will be celebrated in style, just as it deserves!
