Moorhead’s Skyline Set for Transformation with Exciting New Developments

Moorhead is buzzing with excitement as the city’s skyline prepares to transform with the construction of a new mixed-use building, known as the 650 Block. Nestled at the corner of Center Avenue and Seventh Street, this project signifies the beginning of a revitalized downtown area, and crews are diligently working to install prefabricated concrete slabs to bring this vision to life.

What’s Happening at the 650 Block?

Initially dubbed the 600 Block, this building is primed to feature commercial spaces on the first floor and modern apartments spread across the upper levels. Developer Kevin Bartram has shared that construction is progressing smoothly, although, as with all downtown projects, some unexpected challenges have popped up. “We encountered remnants from previous structures, like old foundations and pipes,” Bartram mentioned. “While it was something we anticipated, you always brace yourself for the unexpected.”

This project is just the tip of the iceberg, as it’s part of a larger initiative aimed at redeveloping downtown Moorhead, which will span nine city blocks and include additional apartments, commercial areas, and ample parking. Excitingly, other ongoing projects in downtown Moorhead include paving for a new street and the construction of a new public library and community center.

What to Expect from the Building

The foundation being laid at the 650 Block will comprise a parking structure, commercial spaces, and essential stair and elevator towers, all made from precast concrete. As the construction progresses, three stories of wood framing will be added above the concrete base, creating a welcoming atmosphere for future residents and businesses. One unique feature of the building includes two apartment wings, one overlooking Center Avenue and the other providing stunning views of the Red River.

On a bright note, well-known Downtown Chiropractic will be one of the tenants in the new building, making it a remarkable addition to the developing landscape.

Transportation and Infrastructure Improvements

Right beside the new 650 Block, improvements are being made to the first new road in downtown Moorhead. Crews are wrapping up sewer and water updates and are moving on to pour the roadway and curbs on a segment of Sixth Street. City Engineer Tom Trowbridge expressed relief, stating, “We’re fortunate to keep working right now, as usually construction halts with the onset of snow around this time.” If all goes according to plan, Sixth Street might open by the end of the week of November 18.

Despite some businesses having relocated, several still thrive in the Moorhead Center Mall. The store line-up includes Downtown Chiropractic, Sharon’s Hair and Massage, His Styling Salon, and Moorhead Vision Associates. However, Moorhead Vision Associates is also set for a move to a new facility in the Azool shopping area by late November or early December.

The Future of Downtown Moorhead

With more significant spaces in the western section of the mall vacated, plans for the next demolition phase could launch in late winter or early spring. Derrick LaPoint, president and CEO of Downtown Moorhead Inc., noted, “Our objective is to commence with the next phase of demolition, specifically west of City Hall. This will pave the way for more infrastructure and development opportunities.”

Meanwhile, just southeast of the mall, construction crews from McGough Construction continue to work on the new public library and community center. They are making strides with the precast concrete beams and columns in the basement. McGough Senior Project Manager Jon Pistorius mentioned that they are currently finalizing underground piping and electrical work in anticipation of pouring the basement floor soon. Once completed, the new center is slated to open in spring 2026.

In conclusion, Moorhead is on the verge of an exciting transformation with multiple developments springing to life. From the 650 Block to the new community center, residents can look forward to a vibrant downtown filled with new opportunities and spaces to thrive.
