Community Mourns the Loss of Local Music Legend Gary Pratt
Hilton Head Island has lost a true gem of the music world. Last Sunday afternoon, we said goodbye to Gary Pratt, a talented local musician whose sound echoed across the island’s famous venues. After an 18-month battle with ALS, a brutal neurodegenerative disease, Gary passed away, leaving a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
A Familiar Face in Local Music
For many locals, Gary was a familiar face, often seen strumming his guitar or playing the bass at the Tiki Hut on sunny Sunday afternoons. Whether it was at Captain Woody’s on Thursday nights, Scott’s Fish Market, Calhoun’s, or Big Bamboo, his music brought joy to many. He was also known for jamming in local bands like JoJo Squirrel & The Home Pickles and Low Country Boil.
Gary was a multi-instrumentalist, skillfully playing the guitar, bass, and keyboard, with a vocal range that had no limits. A fellow musician described him in the best possible way: a “musician’s musician.” It’s a term that speaks volumes about how his peers respected his craft. Mike Kavanaugh, who shared the stage with Gary for over 20 years, recalled, “We played to senators, millionaires, and even at next-door neighbors’ oyster roasts. I can’t tell you how many incredible gigs we played together.”
A Heartfelt Legacy
Beyond his musical talent, Gary was known for his kindhearted nature. Jevon Daly, a longtime friend and bandmate, captured Gary’s essence perfectly, saying, “He was the kind of man who made you feel like you could be a better person just by knowing him.” Their connection in the local bluegrass scene showcased Gary’s gentle spirit and his genuine love for music.
Gary’s relationship with music was just one part of his life. He was also a dedicated family man. His wife, Connie, and their two daughters, Abbey and Mallory, were his pride and joy. “There’s not one person you could find who could say a bad word about him,” Connie said, her voice thick with emotion. Their connection was so strong that they even shared a birthday, born just two hours apart. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, often sharing music together as a family.
A Community Coming Together
Gary’s journey with ALS began on April 12, 2023, after months of planning a Taylor Swift concert outing with Abbey. Not wanting to miss out, he secretly bought extra tickets and insisted that the family attend, a testament to his loving spirit even amidst his own struggles. “He wanted us to have these experiences together,” Connie recalled, her heart swelling with pride over his bravery.
Gary’s faith carried him through the darkest days of his illness. His unwavering spirit shined as he mastered an eye gaze communication device to stay connected with his loved ones. “Tell everyone I’ve ever called a friend that I love ‘em and thanks for the memories,” he communicated through the device — a final message that spoke to the essence of who he was.
A Celebration of Life
As word of Gary’s passing spread, the community came together to celebrate his rich life. A celebration of life is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, at 11:00 a.m. at Hilton Head Island Community Church. Following the service, a gathering with music and tributes will occur at Big Bamboo, the exact spot where Gary and Connie first met. How fitting it is for a musician who touched so many lives to have his memory honored in the very place where it all began.
As we grieve the loss of Gary Pratt, we also celebrate the music he leaves behind and the love he shared with all of us. His legacy will live on in our hearts and through the melodies that still linger in the air. Rest in peace, Gary. You will be missed but never forgotten.
