Beaufort Honors Local Veteran Stephen Bennett

In the charming town of Beaufort, we take special pride in our veterans, and today we shine a light on an extraordinary individual: Stephen Bennett, who is 85 years young. Stephen’s journey began in 1958 when he joined the Maine Air National Guard while still in high school. This courageous decision set the stage for a life filled with rich experiences and unwavering dedication.

An Early Start in Aviation

Two years later, in 1960, Stephen embarked on a pivotal chapter of his life by attending Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. After completing his training, he was assigned to Charleston Air Force Base, where he worked with aircraft instrumentation for C-121 Constellations and C-124 Globemasters. Just imagine a young Stephen, diving deep into the world of aircraft, honing his technical skills, and getting ready for adventures to come!

Adventures Abroad

By 1963, Stephen’s career took him to much further locations, as he transferred to Kadena Air Force Base on Okinawa. This international experience surely broadened his horizons. After returning stateside, he continued to excel at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, servicing the remarkable F-100 Super Sabres for three years.

His skill set didn’t stop there; Stephen then made his way to Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, where he prepared special aircraft for deployment to Vietnam. Following this, it was off to Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, before returning again to Charleston, where he would service various aircraft including the C-141 Starlifters, C-130 Hercules, and C-5 Galaxies during a crucial time in American history.

Theological Pursuits

After many years of dedicated service, Stephen made a significant life choice to separate from active duty. Using the GI Bill, he pursued his dream of earning a theology degree from Baptist College of Charleston. His next chapter was impactful; he spent a decade pastoring back in Maine while continuing to serve in the Maine Air National Guard. Stephen certainly liked to keep busy!

A Return to Duty

In 1984, Stephen returned to active duty at Charleston Air Force Base in the C-141 instrument shop. Following that, he transferred to Pope Air Force Base where he took on the role of teaching instrument and autopilot maintenance for six years. This period witnessed his promotion to Master Sergeant, a well-deserved recognition of his expertise and leadership.

The Final Chapter of a Distinguished Career

Stephen’s last active duty assignment was at Rhein Main Air Base in Germany, and he officially retired in 1992. However, this didn’t mark the end for him. For another 22 years, he returned to pastoring in Maine and North Carolina—truly a life of service to others! Finally, he decided to retire again at the age of 70.

New Beginnings in Beaufort

This year, in 2023, Stephen and his lovely wife, Jean, made Beaufort their new home. With so many stories and experiences to share, we can only imagine the wealth of knowledge and inspiration Stephen brings to our community!

Stephen’s journey is a testament to the remarkable paths veterans take and the incredible impact they have on their communities. The American Legion Beaufort Post 207 is always on the lookout to honor our veterans, and if you know someone deserving of the title Veteran of the Week, don’t hesitate to reach out.
