Beaufort County Unites for Record-Breaking Walk for Water Event

Beaufort County Comes Together for the Annual Walk for Water

This September, the lovely city of Beaufort became a hub of community spirit and compassion as hundreds of residents gathered for the eighth annual Beaufort County Walk for Water. This heartwarming event took place on not one, but two dates — September 14 at the picturesque Live Oaks Park in Port Royal, and September 21 at the beautiful Wright Family Park in Bluffton. Despite some participants needing rain jackets, the weather couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm as everyone came together to make a significant difference.

A Symbolic Journey

Walking with purpose, participants carried buckets over a distance of about three miles, representing the daily trek made by millions of women and children in developing countries. This walk isn’t just about a physical journey; it’s a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by many who rely on contaminated water sources. Each step taken during the walk served as a tribute to those who face these challenges daily.

Supporting a Worthy Cause

The event raised an impressive $87,000 — a record amount for the walk, all going to Water Mission, a Charleston-based organization devoted to providing safe water solutions in regions where clean water is scarce. This funding will help change lives in developing countries and disaster areas alike, offering a lifeline of hope to those in desperate need.

Voices of the Participants

Local resident Debbie Slazyk expressed her motivation for participating, saying, “I Walk for Water because it’s a small charity that makes a big, life-changing impact in the communities it serves.” And she is not alone; many others share her sentiment. Lynn Newsom from Bluffton passionately shared, “Water is essential for human life. It’s our responsibility as Christians to help others have clean, accessible water. If we love one another, we must take care of each other.” Such reflections remind us all how vital it is to extend a helping hand to those in need.

A Milestone Achievement

This year, Water Mission honored the Beaufort County Walk for Water with special recognition for surpassing previous fundraising achievements. Over the past seven years, this initiative has successfully raised more than $500,000, providing clean water for life to over 10,000 people. Robert Lasher, the walk chair, expressed heartfelt gratitude for everyone involved, noting, “This is a huge milestone accomplishment for everyone who’s been associated with the Beaufort County Walk for Water, including our walkers, volunteers, and sponsors.”

But it’s not too late to contribute! The efforts of the Beaufort County Walk for Water continue, and they welcome donations to further their mission. If you’re interested in learning more or contributing, you can visit their official site or reach out to them directly.

Gratitude to Sponsors

The success of this event would not have been possible without the generous support of local sponsors. Notable contributions came from First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort and Sea Island Presbyterian Church as platinum sponsors, among many others who lent their support at various levels. The community’s collective effort truly showcases how when we come together, we can accomplish incredible things.

Water Mission’s Impact

Since its inception in 2001, Water Mission has harnessed innovative techniques and engineering prowess to provide access to safe water for over eight million people across 59 countries. With a dedicated team of approximately 400 staff members working relentlessly around the globe, their impact is profound and reaches far and wide. Recognition by Charity Navigator for 15 consecutive years with a top four-star rating reflects their commitment to transparency and effectiveness in their mission.

A United Community Vision
