Community Comes Together in Bluffton to Fight Alzheimer’s
On October 26, the picturesque town of Bluffton was buzzing with excitement and camaraderie as hundreds of locals gathered for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This event not only promotes awareness about a cause that affects millions but also raises crucial funds to support those living with this devastating disease.
Awareness of a Hidden Struggle
Alzheimer’s disease currently impacts nearly 7 million Americans, making it one of the leading causes of death in the United States. During the walk, Ashton Houghton, the Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association South Carolina Chapter, shared some staggering statistics, revealing that more than 112,500 people in South Carolina alone are facing this challenge, alongside 219,000 caregivers who provide essential support to loved ones.
Community Spirit Shines Bright
This year’s event attracted over 350 participants, all united by a common goal – to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research programs. Participants marched with a mixture of determination and hope, motivated by personal experiences and the collective desire for progress against this disease.
A touching story came from local resident Amanda Phillips Hilley, who has participated in the Bluffton Walk since 2018 and has a long history with the cause. She recounted her journey, stating, “I participate (each year) in memory of my dad, for the families throughout our region that are faced with Alzheimer’s, and for the hope to one day find the first survivor to this awful disease.” Amanda expressed her optimism about the progress being made, particularly with the emergence of FDA-approved treatments for individuals in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s.
Raising Funds for a Brighter Future
This year, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Bluffton successfully raised over $87,000, with fundraising efforts set to continue until December 31, aiming for a total of $110,000. These funds are vital for sustaining the services offered by the Alzheimer’s Association, ensuring that families receive the care and support they need while also fueling critical research into finding a cure.
Houghton expressed gratitude towards all the participants, volunteers, and sponsors who contributed to the event’s success. Among the many teams participating were notable groups such as the City of Hardeeville and the University of South Carolina Beaufort, highlighting the broad community support for the cause.
A Call to Action
Hilley is passionate about encouraging community members to get involved, whether through volunteering, advocating, or donating. She emphasizes that every little bit helps, stating, “The funds raised by Walk to End Alzheimer’s help fund research and support services.” She also urges people to access the free educational programs offered by the Association, which provides valuable resources for families navigating the complexities of Alzheimer’s.
The Bigger Picture
The Alzheimer’s Association has proudly labeled the Walk to End Alzheimer’s as the world’s largest event of its kind, drawing in participants from over 600 communities across the nation. This collective effort signifies not only the growing awareness around Alzheimer’s but also a shared commitment to battle this common enemy.
Looking Ahead
As the Bluffton Walk wrapped up, spirits remained high, fueled by the continued dedication of both individuals and communities to combat Alzheimer’s. The environment was one of hope and resilience, as people walked, shared stories, and fostered connections while striving toward a shared goal: To end Alzheimer’s and other dementias forever.
To support the ongoing fight against Alzheimer’s, donations can still be made online, and every contribution helps light the way for those battling this disease.
