Major Kevin Egan’s Extraordinary Journey

Meet Kevin Egan, a 74-year-old military veteran who brings a wealth of experience and stories from his impressive career. After graduating from the prestigious Citadel in 1972, he joined the United States Air Force in Charleston. His adventure kicked off with Basic Training at Lackland AFB, Texas, followed by specialized Emergency Medical Service training at Shepherd AFB.

But that’s not all! Egan’s service went beyond the regular military assignments. He took a leap into humanitarian efforts with the Peace Corps in Paraguay and was a part of a vital Air Force Reserve air evacuation unit at Charleston AFB. His list of extraordinary contributions includes deploying to Jonestown, Guyana, to rescue wounded Congressional aides just before a tragic event occurred with Jim Jones’ followers.

He also played a significant role in operations during a terrorist attack in Peru and was deployed to Grenada during regional conflicts. One of his most challenging missions was during Desert Shield/Storm in Saudi Arabia, where he helped evacuate the wounded to Germany and England. With a total of 30 years under his belt, Egan retired as a Major, bringing home a whopping seven Commendation Medals. Today, he proudly serves as the president of the Recreational Shrimpers of South Carolina.

A Diverse Group of Heroes

Now, let’s not forget about other impressive veterans like Dan Truckenbrod, aged 54, who served in the U.S. Navy. While specifics of his service remain a mystery, his dedication to service is impressive nonetheless.

Then we have Patricia Moore, 57, a remarkable woman who joined the United States Army in Beaufort back in 1986. After completing Basic Training at Fort Jackson, she was trained as a personnel records specialist and deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm. After her service, she transitioned into a civilian role at Fort Lee, Virginia, and made her way back to Beaufort, contributing to property maintenance for 16 years and now supporting facilities maintenance at MCAS Beaufort.

John Dudley, at age 63, adds to this inspiring group with a background in the United States Air Force. Starting his journey in Champaign, New York, in 1982, Dudley trained in AC/Refrigeration mechanics and served both in Texas and Korea before transitioning to HVAC maintenance in various military sites, including the Naval Hospital Beaufort.

Continuing the Legacy

Next up is Alan Szatkowski, 60, who joined the United States Marine Corps in 1983. After finishing boot camp in San Diego, he became an aircraft electrician and served multiple deployments around the world, including Japan and Korea. Following his service, Szatkowski managed the flight line at Hilton Head Airport and now supervises the Public Works Department at the Naval Hospital Beaufort.

Last but certainly not least is young Vicente Perez, just 24 years old. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 2022 and completed Boot Camp in San Diego. As an aviation life support equipment technician, Perez ensures pilot safety for the advanced F-35 Lightning II jets. He and his wife, Daniela, call Laurel Bay home, and he’s already making a name for himself in the military community.
