Exciting Times Ahead for Beaufort: Chalk It Up! Festival to Color the Streets

Get ready, Beaufort! The vibrant streets of this charming town are set to come alive with vibrant colors and impressive artistry as the second annual “Chalk It Up!” Chalk Art Festival rolls into town from March 28 to 30. Hosted by the dedicated Freedman Arts District, this three-day fest promises to be a feast for the senses, transforming our lovely pavement into a stunning open-air gallery filled with large-scale chalk art created by talented artists from all across the country.

What to Expect: An Artistic Extravaganza

The excitement begins with a lively opening reception on Friday evening, setting the stage for an unforgettable weekend. Not only will you be able to witness the birth of countless chalk masterpieces, but the reception will also feature an engaging stage production by Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk and an enlightening presentation by historian Valinda W. Littlefield.

This year, over 40 artists, both newcomers and beloved returning faces, are expected to showcase their skills. Artists will be at work on Saturday and Sunday, pouring their creativity onto the pavement for nearly 17 hours throughout the festival. Visitors can stroll through the festival grounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, soaking in the amazing sights and sounds.

A Colorful Line-Up of Talent

Among the participants will be local talents as well as artists traveling from states as far away as Utah. Bring your family and friends to see familiar faces like Chelsey Scott from Atlanta and Lisa Gaither from Durham, NC, who are returning after dazzling audiences at last year’s inaugural event.

The musical vibe will also be on point, with local musicians like Ashley Holland, Flat Silly, and Walker Dean lighting up the stage on Saturday, while Sunday will feature The Deckhand Band and Ed & Ryan, ensuring that the air is filled with great tunes throughout the festival.

Tantalizing Treats and Activities for Everyone

No festival is complete without delicious food to munch on, and there will be plenty of options available. Food trucks will be stationed on-site, offering mouth-watering treats, while local shops emphasize menu specials tailored for artists and festival-goers alike. A special kids-zone hosted by Happy Art Studio will cater to the younger crowd, featuring hands-on art activities and various vendor booths to explore.

Wrapping Up with a Celebration

The festival will close with a bang on Sunday evening, showcasing the hard work and creativity of all participating artists at a judging and awards ceremony. Cash prizes await the top three artists, including a fantastic $700 for First Place, $500 for Second Place, and a $300 People’s Choice award. It’s an exciting finale you won’t want to miss!

Join the Fun: Get Involved!

10,000 visitors, this year’s festival is anticipated to attract even more creative souls. The Freedman Arts District, a nonprofit devoted to promoting arts and contributing to downtown Beaufort’s economic revitalization, will benefit greatly from this festival, making it a significant fundraising opportunity for the organization.
