This March, Beaufort is buzzing with excitement as the Beaufort History Museum rolls out an incredible opportunity for children and families! Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 22, when the Beaufort Arsenal transforms into a time capsule of the Revolutionary War from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Experience history like never before with a vibrant Living History Reenactment that promises to thrill and educate both young and old.
What’s a Revolutionary War reenactment without a little cannon fire? Heads up! Expect to hear some booming blasts as cannon firings are scheduled at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. This means that from the moment you step foot on the battlefield, you’ll be immersed in the sights and sounds of history. Just remember that Craven Street in front of the Arsenal will be closed for the event, so plan your route accordingly.
Parents, this is your chance to turn your kids into bona fide heroes of their own Revolutionary War saga! The event organizers are on the lookout for a minimum of 50 children to join in and actively participate in the re-creation of the historic Battle of Port Royal Island. Young participants will be divided into two factions—Patriots and Loyalists—making for an exciting and immersive experience as they wage their own friendly battles on the field!
Every child who participates will receive authentic, time-period hats and safe replicas of muskets. No need to worry about real ammunition, as safety is a top priority. Instead, children will learn how to carry and load their muskets using black sugar and gummy balls, ensuring that their adventure is as fun as it is educational.
Throughout the day, there will be a series of thrilling battles, beginning with those exciting cannon firings. Warrior Brigade Commander Tom Oblak and historian Robert Ryals will lead interactive sessions on topics ranging from Revolutionary War drills to period medical practices. Kids will even get the chance to handle prestigious artillery and take aim with a child-friendly “hand cannon”.
This isn’t just about play; it’s also an incredible learning opportunity. Participants will dive into the complexities of life during the Revolutionary War, including how people battled historical epidemics. The hands-on experience allows kids to grasp just how challenging life was for those brave individuals who fought for their ideals.
If you’re a parent, make sure your little ones arrive on time to seize this amazing experience. With plenty of activities and educational sessions planned, it promises to be a memorable day for all! The event is generously funded by a grant from the 250th anniversary of the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250), affirming its importance in celebrating our history.
Be sure to come dressed for a day of adventure and learning! The location, the Beaufort Arsenal and Beaufort History Museum, is situated at 713 Craven Street, Beaufort. Bring the whole family along and get ready to create lasting memories while connecting with the vibrant history that shaped our nation.
So, gather your little ones, take a stroll through history, and become a part of the Revolutionary action happening right in your own backyard!
