Beaufort, South Carolina, is buzzing with anticipation as the city prepares to host the 2024 History Symposium: Where It All Began. This engaging event, organized by the Heritage Days Symposium Subcommittee in partnership with The Pat Conroy Literary Center, will take place on Friday, November 8, at the Frissell Community House on the beautiful Penn Center campus. It promises to be a day filled with learning, celebrating, and honoring the rich history of the Gullah Geechee culture.

Among them is Dr. Louis Venters, a Professor of African and African Diaspora History at Francis Marion University, who will share invaluable insights into the historical journey of the Gullah Geechee people. Joining him is Michael B. Moore, who not only seeks a seat in the SC House of Representatives District 1 but also carries the legacy of the legendary Robert Smalls, his great-great-grandfather.
Rounding out the stellar lineup are Dr. Valinda Littlefield from the University of South Carolina, and Bradley Tarrance, Principal of the Robert Smalls Leadership Academy. Mrs. Deloris Pringle, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Penn Center, will warmly welcome all participants, setting the tone for a day of reflection and celebration. Additionally, a special video presentation titled Gullah Geechee Celebration: 40 Years of Heritage Days at Penn Center will be introduced by Dr. Emory Campbell, the founder of Penn Center Harvest Day and former Executive Director. This is sure to be a highlight, commemorating four decades of honoring Gullah Geechee traditions.
As if that weren’t enough, there will be a book signing session featuring works authored by the presenters and special guest Lynn Bryant, as well as Dr. Emory Campbell. This presents a unique opportunity for attendees to engage directly with the authors and take home their inspiring writings.
